The Legend of Zelda Meets Faith

Zelda

If you are one of the few that hasn’t yet played, “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”, this could be a major spoiler for you. Proceed with caution. In most games, Link is usually on a quest to rescue Zelda, the Hyrule Princess, from Ganon. In Breath of the Wild, however, the story begins by Link waking up 100 years after the successful attack by Ganon on Hyrule.

During a flashback scene, Zelda is seen praying in front of a spirit statue by the Spring of Power. It transpires as such:

I come seeking help…

Regarding this power that has been handed down over time…

Prayer will awaken my power to seal Ganon away…

Or so I’ve been told all my life…

And yet…

Grandmother heard them – the voices from the spirit realm…

And Mother said her own power would develop within me…

But I don’t hear…or feel anything!

Father has told me time and time again…

He always says, “Quit wasting your time playing at being a scholar!”

Curse you…

I’ve spent every day of my life dedicated to praying!

I’ve pleaded to the spirits tied to the ancient gods…

And still the holy powers have proven deaf to my devotion.

Please just tell me…

What is it…?

What’s wrong with me!?

The scene dissipates with Zelda sobbing. Many people feel the same way, as they have built on their faith in things they thought were their purpose, their calling, only to feel like they were not getting anywhere. Many people have gone through the same type of inner turmoil as well…

My (parent) was a (teacher/doctor/etc.)…

So was my (grandparent)…

I will eventually develop the skill…

Or at least that’s what everyone tells me…

And others have told me to quit pretending…

Curse it all…

I have spent my whole life dedicated to that path…

I have asked for God’s help time and time again…

And still it seems like He doesn’t hear me…

Please, just tell me…

What’s wrong with me!?

What is it!?

Many times in the Bible, Jesus does not provide an outright yes or a no to particular questions we ask. Sometimes he simply responds with a tale, a story. But perhaps Christians can find some peace in Zelda’s story as well. She believes in the timing of the gods. But it isn’t until she is far past what she believes she is capable of handling on her own that her true power comes to be.
